Services  >  New Roofs / Replacement Roofing

Day after day, season after season, southern New England roof shingles are subjected to the ever changing elements of sun, heat, rain, cold, and snow. MA residential roofs are dynamic structures and actually move as the many forces of nature act upon it.

On any given day, your roof may be pounded by the sun's destructive ultraviolet rays, stretched by the expansion of intense summer heat, or forced to contract from a sudden cold rain. Your roof never gets a day off! Over time these relentless natural forces will cause minor shingle defects, which if ignored, can cause major roofing problems.

Over Three Decades Of Roofing Experience

Cycle Roofing & Carpentry understands a sound roof is the first and most important defense in protecting your home. As a South Shore MA / southeastern MA roofing specialist for over 34 years, our experienced roofing professionals have installed thousands of new roofs and replacement roofs on homes like yours. We know firsthand how the demanding environment and hostile weather of southern Massachusetts has a direct impact on the longevity of your roofing shingles.

Though the signs of normal shingle aging vary, it may be time for a new roof if you notice:

  • Curling: Over time the asphalt in a shingle will harden, causing embedded granules to loosen and wash away. Initially you may notice the colored granules in your gutters. As hardening advances, the layers in the asphalt layers begin to shrink causing the edges of the shingles to curl.
  • Surface cracking: Asphalt contains oils for flexibility. As they age, the oils are depleted due to heat. The shingles become more brittle and develop surface cracking. Stresses created by thermal shock and the flexing movement of the roof deck also increase the likelihood of surface cracking.
  • Blisters: As a process of natural weathering, small open or closed bubble-like blisters may appear on the surface of the shingles. Blisters frequently result when adequate attic ventilation requirements are not met.
  • Staining: Shingles may develop dark streaks that are often thought to be soot, dirt, moss, or tree droppings. In reality, this streaking may be caused by algae growth. Most roofing systems are subject to algae discoloration, though it is most often visible on light-colored shingles.

Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the industry standard and are used on over 80% of homes in North America. The varied styles, colors, strength, and durability of asphalt shingles make them a great choice for most South Shore MA / southeastern MA residences. Asphalt shingles work well with most southern New England house styles – Capes, colonials, ranches, modern contemporary homes, and others. Types Of Asphalt Roof Shingles

  • Standard three tab composition shingles have been installed on single family residences since the early 1900's. Three tab asphalt shingles differ mainly in color and come with 25- to 30-year warranty coverage.

We offer shingles from GAF - America's largest roofing manufacturer. Their Marquis WeatherMax shingles are designed for homeowners who demand superior performance, classic detailing, and a traditional appeal in a basic 3-tab shingle. The GAF Royal Sovereign® line of shingles combine a simple, timeless beauty with GAF's Advanced Protection™ technology — making it our most popular 3-tab shingle.

  • Architectural shingles are heavier weight than the 3 tab. Their three-dimensional appearance can provide a major aesthetic upgrade for your home. Made to simulate the look of cedar wood shakes or even slate shingles, they are composed of a heavy fiber glass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules tightly embedded in water-resistant asphalt.

These dimensional architectural shingles were developed in the 70's for the high-end home market. Homeowner's were looking for a shingle product to help raise the curb appeal and value of their homes. The development of the architectural shingle with the appearance of cedar and the performance of asphalt was the answer. The layered construction of the architectural shingle gives it a similar look and texture to cedar shakes.

Architectural shingles offer better performance because of their heavier construction. They are less likely to warp and have better wind resistance (80 mph to 120 mph) than traditional 3 tab shingles. Though dimensional shingles cost only 20% more than the traditional type, they are a better value as they offer warranties from 20 to 30 years.

  • Designer shingles are considered as super heavyweights due to their multi-layered construction. They can weigh as much as 450 lbs. per square! That is a huge difference when compared to the lighter 3 tab shingle at 150 lbs. per square. Designer shingles are also built to withstand winds in excess of 110 mph and have lifetime limited warranties instead of 20 - 30 year warranties as with most standard and architectural shingles.

These shingles are composed of multiple layers firmly laminated together in a special tough asphaltic cement. This type of shingle can be used on roofs with slopes greater than 2" per foot. Low slope applications (2" to 4" per foot) require additional underlayment to prevent leakage. In our southern New England area where icing along the eaves can cause a backup of water, they must have a waterproofing underlayment such as the CertainTeed WinterGuard™ placed under the shingles.

Most of these shingles have the additional attribute of resisting the growth of algae (commonly called fungus), especially in damp regions. This design feature helps prevent the black streaking commonly seen on shingles in areas with high humidity and rainfall totals.

Advantages Of Asphalt Roof Shingles

  • Lower Costs - Asphalt shingles are manufactured in high volumes, so they are relatively inexpensive to produce. Installation is also relatively inexpensive compared to other materials. Lightweight asphalt shingles are the easiest type of roofing material to install and will usually cost less than $1 per square foot.
  • Maintenance - Asphalt roof shingles can be manufactured to look like natural materials such as cedar shakes, tile, or wood, but unlike these materials they require very little maintenance to maintain their good looks. If they should become damaged, asphalt shingles can be easily repaired.
  • Appearance - The look is a big advantage of asphalt roof shingles. Since they come in a wide variety of shapes, textures, and colors, you will have no trouble finding a type that will look great on your home. You can have a roof that looks like more expensive cedar shakes, slate, tile, or wood with all the advantages and performance benefits of asphalt shingles.

Types Of Red Cedar Roofing Shingles & Shakes

  • Perfection Red Cedar Shingles come from only the best wood mills and are available in 18" and 24" lengths. They are referred to as "perfection," as they are 100% heartwood, 100% clear, and 100% edge grain, meaning they are without blemishes or defects. Thinner than a shake, premium red cedar shingles are tapered cut and smooth sawn on both faces for a very tailored and neat appearance.
  • Premium Tapersawn Red Cedar Shakes are made similar to perfection shingles in that both sides are sawn to create smooth faces, but tapersawns are cut thicker. A premium tapersawn shake presents a more textured appearance and has the naturally tailored look of a shingle, but is enhanced by a sharp shadow line caused by the thicker 5/8" butt.
  • Hand split red cedar shakes have split faces and sawn backs. Unlike smooth wood shingles, they are sawn smooth on the back side only. The exposed hand split face of red cedar shakes results in a more interesting dimensional looking roof characteristic of hand split shakes. Hand split shakes are available in 18" and 24" lengths.

Advantages Of Red Cedar Roofing Shingles & Shakes

  • Energy Savings: Red cedar is an excellent thermal insulator. Due to its exceptional thermal properties, cedar roofing is a great way to lower your heating and cooling costs. The natural low density wood fibers of cedar act as a second layer of insulation on your home. In our cold weather, much of the heat from your home is lost through the roof. A cedar roof will allow you to retain more heat. In our hot weather, your cedar roof will help maintain cooler temperatures inside your home. Not only does cedar save on home heating and cooling, but it takes less energy to manufacture a renewable cedar shingle or shake roof than for a petroleum-based asphalt composition shingle.
  • Strength & Durability: Though low in density, cedar wood roofing has incredible strength and is naturally durable. In fact, cedar is regarded as one of the world's toughest woods. Cedar's dimensional stability helps this wood keep its shape. Shingles and shakes made from cedar won't shrink, warp, or crack like many other types of wood. These unique characteristics help make it the only type of roofing material to actually contribute to a home's structural integrity. Other forms of roofing material just exert a dead load on the roof. The overlapping or "bridging" effects of cedar shingles and shakes actually increase wind resistance and add to the absolute strength of your roof. In wind tunnel tests, cedar roofing has stood up to winds in excess of 130 miles per hour.
  • Weather Resistance & Durability: Cedar fights insects and UV damage naturally. Able to withstand hail and heavy storms, it stands up well to the thermal shock of the frequent freeze-thaw cycles of our New England winters. Shingles and shakes made of cedar have natural preservatives that help to resist moisture. The heartwood of cedar contains substances that are toxic to decay-causing fungi. The natural characteristics of cedar roofing shingles and shakes make them a smart choice for the tough and demanding climate of our southern New England region.
  • Appearance: Cedar makes very attractive type of wood roofing. New cedar shingles and shakes display many color variations and tones from blonde red to cinnamon. As time passes, the cedar color will mature to a seasoned and distinguished-looking silvery gray. Versatile cedar wood roofing will also accept a range of finishes, from stains and fine oils to paint or even solid coatings. Whatever cedar shingle or shake style you choose, you can be assured your cedar roof will provide lasting protection and value to your Massachusetts home.
